Type Locality and Naming

The naming section for the Jiyuan Gr, of which this is the lower formation, is located in the area from Zhangzhuang through Niezhuang to the Nanyao Reservoir, Jiyuan County, Henan. Named by the 104 Party of the Division of Exploration, Ministry of Petroleum, in 1959.


Lithology and Thickness

Mainly brown and brownish red mudstone with grayish purple, fine quartzose sandstone and siltstone with conglomerate at the base. About 250-m thick outcrops are observed at the surface at Nanyao Village, while a thickness of about 500 m is exposed in the well.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

This formation unconformably overlies the Jurassic.

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Zeyu Fm.

Fossils

This formation also contains abundant microfossils, of which the ostracods include Cyprinotus cingalensis, Candoniella mirabilis and Ilyocypris errabundis and the charophytes include Grovesichara gonganensis and Hornichara lagenalis. For fossil vertebrates, only Kansuchelys sp. is found.


Age 

The age of this group was suggested to be Eocene (Zheng et al., 1999), but Li et al. (2019) restrict it to Early to Middle Eocene.
